APPBENCH Dataset

This is the fabric appearance benchmark of the Bonn SVBRDFs dataset.

It is being used in the Fabric Appearance Challenge.

Most details of the APPBENCH dataset are very similar to the UBOFAB19 dataset, please read its description first.

Differences to UBOFAB19

  • roughly 10% of the point-lit images (40 out of 388) are in a holdout test set, which is not publicly available and instead is used for evaluation of the Fabric Appearance Challenge. Accordingly, the matXXXX_pan.exr and matXXXX_poly.exr files are missing some channels.
  • The holdout channel names are listed under the key "holdout_poly2pan" in the matXXXX_calibration.mat calibration file, together with the weights for converting from polychromatic to panchromatic images. The latter are necessary for reproducing the panchromatic images of the holdout set.
  • We release confidence weight maps that are the same maps used for the weighted branch of the challenge evaluation. They are provided in individual EXR files named matXXXX_rel_lls.exr, matXXXX_rel_pan_poly.exr and matXXXX_rel_pan_poly_holdout.exr for the different modalities and the holdout set respectively. These maps provide per-pixel confidences that result from different sources: First, they are the product of the cosines between light respectively view and the normal, i.e. <L,N> · <V,N>. Such weights are motivated by area foreshortening effects and the associated uncertainties. Second, radiometric and visibility confidences are included as well, i.e. shadowing, masking or uncertainties from HDR combination. Affected pixels are determined via raytracing against the surface geometry from lights and cameras and are set to 0. Third, occlusions due to the TAC7 device geometry are accounted for, again by setting occluded / shadowed pixels to 0.
  • The SVBRDFs in this dataset feature a spatially varying (SV) Fresnel coefficient and are fit by a newer version of X-Rite's Pantora (1.6 instead 1.4).

Likewise, we also relase such improved SVBRDFs for UBOFAB19 as a new revision of the dataset. This improves usability for methods trained to directly regress to the SVBRDF parameters, as the uniform Fresnel coefficients could lead to ambiguous training samples.

Below you can download SVBRDFs obtained with X-Rite's Pantora Material Hub fitting software, along with the underlying calibrated TAC7 measurements. All materials, both in the form of calibrated measurements, as well as the SVBRDF fits, are freely available for research purposes.

If you want to download individual SVBRDFs and / or measurements, you can browse the entire dataset below. You can find download links on the detail pages. Alternatively, we provide scripts for Linux / Windows that automatically download all files of the training and validation splits. The scripts rely on wget, which should be installed on Linux systems and can be downloaded for Windows. The materials are sorted by fabric type in each split, the different categories and their occurrences are listed for both splits and can be highlighted interactively.
