The Institute of Computer Science II is offering 8 PhD scholarships in the recently established graduate school ‘Digital Material Appearance’ at the University of Bonn, sponsored by X-Rite Europe GmbH. Along with the graduate school, an additional working group including a new professorship focusing on Digital Material Appearance will be installed. This will allow for an optimal mentoring of the PhD students of the graduate school. Successful applicants will have an opportunity to participate in world-class research in a rapidly growing field.

Digital Material Appearance

Digital Material Appearance is a new area within the field of visual computing concerned with concepts and methods for the digital acquisition, representation, analysis and synthesis of material appearance, i.e. the visual impression of a material on a human observer. In contrast to color science, more parameters than just the color of the material perception are considered. This typically includes the inherent characteristics of the material such as the geometry of the object, the spatial variation of different physical and optical properties as well as aspects related to the observation conditions like the lighting of an object and its surroundings and last but not least on the observer.

In its first phase the research program will focus on material acquisition, analysis, processing and synthesis, as well as material presentation, i.e. rendering on different devices. See Projects for recent research project examples.

Application requirements

The applicant's profile will preferably include the following characteristics:

  • master or university diploma degree in computer science, physics, mathematics or other related fields
  • good written and oral communication skills (English)
  • strong interest and background in computer graphics
  • research or work experience in image processing, computer graphics or computer vision
  • good programming skills (C/C++, Matlab)

X-Rite

is the global leader in color science and technology. They are in the process of extending their products and services beyond color towards full digital material appearance. X-Rite’s new Total Appearance Capture (externwww.xrite.com/TAC) is the future of rendering of automotive effect paints, textured materials and other unique surfaces. This technology is closely related to the research activities of the Computer Graphics group at the University of Bonn.
