As the amount of available biological data is increasing rapidly, thedevelopment of efficient, robust and, hence, reliable algorithms tohandle large amounts of data becomes crucial. In particular,bioinformaticists have to know, how to manage parsing large ascii filesand how to extract the sought-after information. This, in turn, makesthe knowledge about different specific file formats, like FASTA orGenBank files, necessary.

In the first part of this course, we will focus on the programminglanguage Perl. The access to Perl is rather simple, but it is a powerfultool to handle strings, which is important to parse data from files. Butdue to efficiency issues, it becomes often necessary to employ Java orC/C++ to solve problems in the field of life science informatics.Therefore, the second part of the course will focus on bioinformaticspecific Java routines.
